How Can This Be: The Overshadowing Power Of The Most High

[Notes]
The Overshadowing Power of the Most High

Luke 1:26-38 (NKJV)
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

INTRODUCTION: During this Convention, we have been looking at the theme “HOW CAN THIS BE?” This question arose during a dialogue between Mary and the angel Gabriel. As Mary was going about her normal life, she received a surprise visit from heaven. The angel brought news from the throne of God that sounded too good to be true. The news was that Mary had been highly favored because she had been chosen to be the one to give birth to the Messiah – the greatest human being to ever walk on planet earth.

As the message sank into her spirit, she considered her present circumstances, her age, her marital status, her social standing in society and many other things – wondering “HOW CAN THIS BE? Then the angel revealed to her that the Holy Spirit was going to handle the situation. The Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her resulting in heaven’s agenda for her life coming to pass. So as we conclude this Convention, we would be looking at the topic – “THE OVERSHADOWING POWER OF THE MOST HIGH.”

A) WHAT IS THE OVERSHADOWING POWER OF THE MOST HIGH?
According to Jewish expressions, the Hebrews like to poetically express the same thought twice but in a slightly different way. This is called PARALLELISM.

Example 1: Psalms 119:105 (NKJV)
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Example 2: Psalms 24:1-2 (NKJV)
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.
2 For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters.

Luke 1:35 (NIV)
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the POWER of the Most High will OVERSHADOW you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

• The angel says the same thing twice
• First – “The Holy Spirit will come upon you
• Second – The power of the Most High will overshadow you

This means that the overshadowing power of the Most High on a life means “the coming of the Holy Spirit upon that life.”

I. POWER – The Greek word is “DUNAMIS” meaning:

• Ability to perform
• Strength to accomplish

II. OVERSHADOW – The Greek word is “EPISKIAZO” meaning:

• To hover or hang over like a cloud casting a shadow
• To brood over – like a hen sits on her eggs to incubate them
• To envelope

For example: In the Transfiguration on the Mount

Luke 9:34 (NKJV)
34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and OVERSHADOWED them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud.

B) CONDITIONS FOR OVERSHADOWING
Scripture reveals that certain conditions must be met before the Holy Spirit can overshadow a life or a particular situation.

I. THE APPOINTED TIME

The Holy Spirit always overshadows a life at the appointed time. In the Greek New Testament, there are two different words for time – CHRONOS & KAIROS.

a) CHRONOS – refers to regular clock time as measured by hours, minutes, days, months and years.

Luke 8:27 (NKJV)
27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long TIME. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs.

b) KAIROS – refers to the opportune time, the most suitable time or most favorable moment to do something.

Example 1: Sarah
Genesis 18:14 (NKJV)
14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the APPOINTED TIME I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Example 2: Habakkuk
Habakkuk 2:3 (NKJV)
3 For the vision is yet for an APPOINTED TIME; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.

• Man has a human calendar and God has his own calendar
• God measures time differently from man
• With God 1 day can be like a 1000 years and 1000 years like 1 day
• A “KAIROS MOMENT” is a season in which DIVINE CALENDAR invades HUMAN CALENDAR impregnating it with supernatural opportunities.
• Miracles are birthed instantly.
• Destinies are turned around speedily.
• Victories are won easily.
• Kairos moments must be seized and taken advantage of or they will be lost.

The Holy Spirit is the ENGINEER OF KAIROS MOMENTS because He is in charge of God’s calendar on earth.

II. THE APPOINTED PLACE

Every believer has an appointed place that attracts the overshadowing power of the Holy Spirit.

• Mary’s appointed place was Nazareth
Luke 1:26 (NKJV)
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

• Even though there was a bad reputation that nothing good could come out of Nazareth
John 1:46 (NKJV)
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

• But it was in Nazareth that the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary

NOTE: When you miss your appointed place, you miss your appointment with God.

Example 1: Jonah was sent to Nineveh – but ran away to Tarshish. He ended up endangering lives and then in a fish belly.

Jonah 1:1-3 (NKJV)
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”
3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

Example 2: Isaac wanted to go to Egypt because of the famine but was told by God to stay in Gerar – his appointed place.

Genesis 26:1-3 (NKJV)
1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.
2 Then the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.
3 Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

III. ON APPOINTED PEOPLE

The Holy Spirit overshadows certain people appointed by God.

Luke 1:30 (NKJV)
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found FAVOR with God.

• Favor refers to the grace of God
• Mary was chosen, not because she was qualified, but because God qualified her

C) THE RESULTS OF THE OVERSHADOWING POWER OF THE MOST HIGH
Whenever the power of the Most High overshadows, certain important results are bound to manifest. In this story 4 important results were seen:

I. IMPOSSIBILITIES ARE CONVERTED TO POSSIBILITIES

Luke 1:34-37 (NKJV)
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”

Example: Mary

• Mary was wondering how someone who had never slept with a man could conceive
• In the natural, it seemed impossible
• It contradicted all biological laws of nature
• But when the power of the Most High overshadowed the situation, the biological laws of nature were suspended
• Supernatural laws were set into motion which converted the impossibilities into possibilities

II. SUPERNATURAL REVERSAL IS ACTIVATED – (of disgrace back to grace)

Luke 1:36 (NKJV)
36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

Luke 1:24-25 (NIV) – Elizabeth’s response
24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.
25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and TAKEN AWAY MY DISGRACE among the people.”

Example: Elizabeth

• Elizabeth had been married for many, many, years
• Because she could not bring forth, she had been labeled “barren”
• Disgrace set into her life and destiny
• Her mockers talked about her behind her back
• But when the power of the Most High overshadowed her, her shame and reproach were rolled away
• Disgrace was converted to grace
• Barrenness was converted to fruitfulness
• Joy overflowed her heart and a new song was put in her mouth

PROPHECY: I SEE EVERY BARRENESS IN YOUR LIFE CONVERTED TO FRUITFULNESS – IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS.
MAY EVERY IMPOSSIBLE SITUATION IN YOUR LIFE BE MADE TO POSSIBLE

III. SUPERNATURAL PRESERVATION IS ENFORCED

Luke 1:31 (NKJV)
31 And behold, YOU WILL CONCEIVE IN YOUR WOMB AND BRING FORTH A SON, and shall call His name Jesus.

• Not everyone who conceives, brings forth the baby
• Sometimes natural forces militate against the baby
• Other times demonic forces militate against the baby
• BUT – to overshadow means to ENVELOPE, TO BUILD A HEDGE OF PROTECTION AROUND
• The Holy Spirit took full responsibility for the birthing of baby Jesus

Isaiah 66:9 (NKJV)
9 Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?” says the Lord. “Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God.

• Even when Herod tried to kill the little child Jesus, the Holy Spirit ensured that His life was preserved

PROPHECY: NO ONE WILL EVER MISCARRY AGAIN IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME. MAY NO ONE EVER BURY THEIR CHILD IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME.

IV. OUTSTANDING ELEVATION IS GUARANTEED

Luke 1:28 (NKJV)
28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; BLESSED ARE YOU AMONG WOMEN!”

• Mary was singled out from all women for outstanding elevation
• Before this time, no one knew her
• She was a mere village girl
• But in a kairos moment, she was elevated from “VILLAGE GIRL” to “MOST BLESSED AMONG WOMEN”

PROPHECY: MAY THE OVERSHADOWING POWER OF GOD SINGLE YOU OUT TODAY IN JESUS NAME.

D) MAINTAINING THE OVERSHADOWING PRESENCE OF THE MOST HIGH
John 1:29-33 (NKJV)
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’
31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

It is not enough to have the overshadowing presence of the Holy Ghost, but His presence must be maintained permanently on our lives.

John testified about Jesus that the Holy Spirit did not just descend upon Him, but remained upon Him also. That was what guaranteed perpetual victory in His life and ministry.

Great champions in the Bible like Samson and Saul lost this overshadowing presence and they also lost the dominion they had over their enemies.

Judges 16:20-21 (NKJV)
20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” So he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.
21 Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza. They bound him with bronze fetters, and he became a grinder in the prison.

• Samson thought he could continue to toy with the overshadowing power of the Most High upon his life
• As a Nazarite, he was not supposed to touch the dead
• But he took honey out of the lion he had killed and ate it
• He slept with a prostitute and when they laid wait for him, he took the gate of the city and carried it away
• He thought he was invincible
• But one day, the overshadowing power of the Most High left him and he did not even know

1 Samuel 16:14 (NIV)
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.

• Saul also started well as king of Israel
• But he began playing the fool
• He became proud
• He toyed with jealousy and envy
• He refused to submit to authority & the power of the Most High left him

The question is what should a believer do in order to maintain the overshadowing power of the Most High?

I. PLUG INTO THE PURPOSE OF GOD

Acts 10:38 (NKJV)
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

• Jesus went about executing the will of the Father
• He did not just sit down with the overshadowing power of the Most High
• The more obedient He was, the more backing He received from His Father

Example: Mary also plugged herself into the purpose of God

Luke 1:38 (KJV)
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Luke 1:45 (KJV)
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

II. CONSECRATION

Consecration means – to be set apart and made holy for the Master’s use

1 Peter 1:15-16 (NKJV)
15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Example 1: Jesus maintained the anointing on His life by holiness

Romans 1:4 (NKJV)
4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

III. HUMILITY & MEEKNESS

Example 1:Mary

Luke 1:46-48 (NIV)
46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,

Example 2: Jesus

Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

IV. PRAYER & FASTING

Example: Jesus

Luke 4:1 (NKJV)
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Luke 4:14 (NKJV)
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.

• The power of the Most High is released in an atmosphere of prayer
• After Jesus was baptized, the power of the Most High overshadowed Him
• He went to the wilderness to fast and pray
• He returned in the power of the Spirit
• Throughout His life and ministry, he maintained a regular life of prayer and fasting

V. FELLOWSHIP WITH LIKE-MINDED BELIEVERS

Example: Saul

1 Samuel 10:5-6 (NKJV)
5 After that you shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is. And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.
6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.

• When Saul found himself in the company of prophets, he prophesied
• If you associate with people who walk in the overshadowing power of the Most High, the same will happen to you

VI. A LIFESTYLE OF PRAISE

Psalms 22:3 (KJV)
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

2 Kings 3:15 (AMP)
15 But now bring me a minstrel. And while the minstrel played, the hand and power of the Lord came upon [Elisha].

E) SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
As we conclude this Convention today, be reminded that the power of the Most High has been poured out upon our lives. But it is not enough to have a temporary experience with Him. We need a permanent experience.

If we walk in holiness, humility, fasting, prayer, engaging the word and fellowship, we are guaranteed of an ever-winning life and destiny.

• Impossibilities will be converted to possibilities
• Supernatural Reversal of Disgrace to grace will be activated
• Supernatural Enforcement of Preservation
• Outstanding Elevation will be experienced

F) ALTAR CALL

G) PRAYER POINTS

Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11 (NKJV)
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

1) They opened their treasures (abundant joyful giving) – not closed them
2) They gave costly gifts – gold
3) They gave purposeful (prophetic) gifts – in line with Christ’s destiny
a. Gold – royalty (kingship)
b. Frankincense – High Priestly Ministry
Myrrh – Prophetic Ministry of suffering death & humiliation
